“I’m worth far more than that!”, you might be thinking. But are you really?

This is a tough topic for me to write about. I’ve gone on record before saying how great things were in early 2009. A year ago, I was writing marketing plans for startup companies to take before million-dollar investors and getting paid $1,500 a pop for them. I was getting projects to the tune of $600-$700 every couple weeks. Money was flowing, my pen was flying (well, the cursor on my computer screen anyway – who uses a pen anymore?) and life was good.

And you know what? When I think of being Location Independent again, that’s what I think about – and I bet you do too…

It’s the dream life of many an aspiring entrepreneur: you set your own hours, work in your pajamas (or your boxers on a hot day) and collect plenty to live on and even buy some pretty things. You’re happy, your clients are happy and the work keeps you busy and generally in a great mood.

The big problem is so many aspiring entrepreneurs think they’ll be able to start right there, right at that point.

You want to storm into you boss, yell “I QUIT!”, photocopy your butts on the way out and be done with the office life forever. Then you pick up some steaks for dinner on the way home and you arrive to an inbox that is jam-packed with high-quality, agreeable clients who want to pay top-dollar for your services.

Yeah, that doesn’t really work that way.

You have to struggle, you have to claw. You have to – *shudder* – network. You have to kiss up to clients to get good feedback and half-decent testimonials that you can give to your next prospect. You have to take low-paying gigs just to get off the ground and you may have to hang around that office a little longer and laugh at your boss’s jokes.

Think of starting a business like losing weight – one pound at a time. You don’t start a diet and look fantastic the next day. Unfortunately, when it comes to lifestyle design & location independence, this can be the expectation.

In my case, I might as well be starting out all over again after four years of grinding it out. As a freelancer, just about all of my work was done through other marketing firms, meaning I have no access to past clients, the testimonials are for the firm, not me, and the clients’ names and credentials all belong to the firm.

As far as the world is concerned, I didn’t do a thing for four years but the firms I worked for sure have cranked out some quality work, apparently. I’m a nobody. I might as well have spent the last two years living in my parents’ basement alone because there’s no evidence that I even existed professionally. Lesson learned.

So I’m in the same boat all you other aspiring LIPs are in but the good news is that we have plenty of opportunity, we just need to go out & snag it. Here’s what we’re going to do about it:

We’re creating a killer portfolio…

It can be mock-ups or little jobs that you’ve done already. Doesn’t matter. You need to have something to prove your worth. Make up a bunch of companies if you really have to. Good, small clients see the talent through the lackluster credentials and will be willing to take a chance on you.

We’re starting a blog…

Ah yes, the ultimate “me too” advice. Everybody tells you to start a blog. They’re right. A blog gives you a venue to showcase your talent. It gives you the psychological advantage of knowing you’re working on something, at least.

It also gives you the chance to network without having to attend 7:00am Chamber of Commerce breakfasts where everybody is trying to sell to everybody else and nothing gets done for 2 hours (been there, done that ).

I didn’t wake up one morning and decide to start writing for the blog here at Location Independent Professionals. I built up a reputation and relationship with Lea (on Twitter, in fact) and used my own blog to establish some credibility. You can network with tons of people who might come across your blog and opportunities will start opening up because of this.

We’re hopping on a job board like Elance or Guru...

A big “thank you” goes to Sarah (my fellow blogger here) for emailing this suggestion. Ironically, I had already started using Elance before she emailed me but it’s still a great idea.

For bigger, more established professionals however, Elance looks awful. People see Elance as a place where bidders undercut each other for cheap, lousy work. Certainly that happens, but you know what? I’ve been undercut in the “big professional” world too. I’ve seen cheap, lousy work there too. Elance is full of big-time opportunities and so are other job boards.

The secret, in the beginning at least, is to take the smaller jobs first. For a writer, that may mean writing 35 content articles on horses (been there, too). Take the ones you hate but kick some major butt at them. Build up that profile, get that great feedback and the big dogs will be willing to listen to your bid on their monster project later on.

Most importantly, take whatever you can get. Check your standards at the door. While I wouldn’t advise you do anything you are morally against, in the beginning you do need to grab anything that comes your way. It may feel demeaning, but everybody has to pay their dues a little bit. It’ll be worth it in the long run.

The biggest point is that you prove your experience. You are only worth what your client perceives you to be worth. If they don’t think you’re worth $5 an hour, you’re not worth $5 an hour. Work your tail off and build up some experience. Then when you demand what you are worth, people will take notice.

** This post was written by Tina Gibbons. Find out more about Tina below. **

Writing is arguably one of the most location independent professions in existence, but if you’re an aspiring author/writer who has not yet been published, how do you turn your written words into cash?

I often meet aspiring writers who dream of making a living from travel writing, desire the credibility of being published or long to share their work with a wider audience. Unfortunately though, one of the most frequent comments I hear is something along the lines of “the problem with writing is you have to get work published, before you can be paid to be published or make any money from writing”.

As a result of this (incorrect) belief, many aspiring writers keep going with their day job, whilst committing a large portion of their spare time to carefully crafting article proposals or book outlines in the hope that one of them will eventually be accepted by a big name newspaper or publisher. Most give up before they achieve their dream.

I’ve also met people who have never dared to dream that they could become a “writer”. There is such a huge myth that you have to possess the intellect of Gore Vidal or character building skill of J K Rowling, that many people subconsciously dismiss the idea without consideration. I have a friend who fell into this category and yet following a series of circumstances fuelled by blogging she was approached by a publisher and her first book will be available on the shelves this year.

The point is, these limiting beliefs may have held true in the hay days of print publishing, but with the explosion of web 2.0, social networking and online marketing, the call for writers of all levels is enormous. The following are just 3 common opportunities available to aspiring writers hoping to make a living from their craft – without needing to be published…

Copywriting

The majority of businesses now have some kind of online presence or website. And as we know, in order for any website to be effective and convert visitors to sales, the text or copy it contains needs careful consideration – yet surprisingly, it still remains one of the most overlooked areas by businesses everywhere – often content to write their own copy, mistakenly thinking they know their business & how to describe it to potential customers better than anyone.

Writing content for websites is also a different matter entirely and it’s not a world that all business owners have the time or inclination to explore, let alone master. In fact, many website designers are skilled in design and search engine optimisation, yet are often not “clued up” on effective copywriting.

Here lies location independent opportunity # 1 for writers – to offer copywriting support to businesses and web designers. It isn’t difficult to acquire basic copywriting skills – especially if you’re already a writer – and there are a number of websites out there to help. That said, it is important to understand that effective copywriting is indeed a skill in its own right – good grammar and spelling are not enough on their own, neither is copywriting knowledge in the offline world – so you must ensure you hone your skills in this area first.

Ghost Writing

As the competition to attain top position in the search engines heats up, businesses are blogging, publishing articles on article submission sites and producing e-books in order to promote their expertise and establish back links to their websites. All of these articles and blog posts need to be written – and you don’t need me to tell you how much time and effort this can take.

Lo and behold, in rolls location independent opportunity # 2 – ghost writing article, blog posts & e-books for businesses who want to gain a better online presence, provide quality information to their customers and drive more traffic to their website.

Personally, this is an area of work I love. If you can obtain a client who works in an industry that you are personally interested in, you get to research and write about the things you want to write about.

There are scores of writers out there at the moment offering articles and blog posts for tiny amounts of cash; I don’t for one second propose you join them, unless of course you can churn out articles within minutes and ensure they are all well researched, grammatically correct, key word rich and a good read. Equally there are many copywriters out there who offer their services for extortionate amounts of money. They may be very skilled at what they do, but the average business can’t afford them.

What I propose is that you pitch yourself somewhere in the middle, offer a good quality service at a price most businesses can afford – and most importantly, target a specific niche.

Self-Publishing

If you’ve taken care of the bills with writing for others, how about focussing on publishing your own work? This might be an e-book or online course or blogging in a niche area and generating an income through affiliate marketing & advertising.

With the introduction of self-publishing services such as Lulu, Blurb or eJunkie, self-publishing your own books & e-books has never been simpler or more affordable.

At the same time, it would be sensible to learn how to market yourself and your work online – aside from writing your book, this is one of the most valuable skills you can learn and will set you head & shoulders above your peers. Generating an income through publishing your own work can be challenging – and is often not instant cash – but it most definitely is possible.

Conclusion

For those of you who aspire to seeing your name in print on the cover of your own book or alongside columns in newspapers and magazines, these opportunities may not lead you directly to your ultimate goal.

However by incorporating writing into your everyday work, you will at least be practicing your writing skills on a daily basis and building a name for yourself as a writer.

If you can successfully master the online marketing skills to generate copywriting or ghost writing work, whilst simulateneously publishing your own work, you will be giving yourself a few huge advantages when the time & opportunity to be published comes your way.

** This post was written by Andy Hayes. Find out more about Andy at the bottom. **

Welcome to another regular feature on the Location Independent blog: Inspirational Destinations – an interview with a LIP on location.

These are to remind us about all about inspiration: don’t do all that hard work to build yourself a nomadic lifestyle and then fail to take advantage of it fully. We’ve given you the tools to build a lifestyle the way you want it – and now we can help you decide where to spend it.

Last time we spoke with Leigh-Anne Russell who is location independent in Shanghai. This month’s volunteer interviewee is Sharon Hurley Hall. Many of you will know Sharon already as she’s a huge contributor to the community here and a friendly face that seems to pop up everywhere…

First, could you briefly introduce yourself and your business?

I’m an all-around freelance writer. You can find examples of my work at my popular writing site, Get Paid to Write Online. Currently, I write articles, prepare news and features for online magazines and write for three blogs, plus my own. I’ve been in the writing business for more than 20 years and have been freelancing full time for about four.

You’re based in Barbados. What made you decide to relocate there? Purely for sunshine, umbrella drinks, and glistening beaches?

I had a couple of reasons for relocating to this area. I wanted to be closer to a couple of members of my family. Also, I like the lifestyle. Being in a place with lots of sea breezes and where you can be outside all year round really appealed to all of us, so it was an easy decision to make. Of course, it took a few years to actually achieve it, but we’re pretty happy. The fact that it’s out of the hurricane belt (the last serious one was in 1955) also makes it a better choice than some of the other islands.

As a business owner, how has your experience been living in Barbados so far?

One of the great things about Barbados is that everything works, most of the time, anyway. The telecoms infrastructure is good and although my ADSL is slower than the cable connection I would have had if I’d stayed in the UK, it’s not too shabby. Of course, on the odd occasions when I have to resort to dialup, I don’t feel quite as sanguine, but that’s only happened a couple of times. My favorite coffee shop has free wifi and there are plenty of internet cafes dotted around the island.

The office environment in Barbados is a bit more formal than in the UK, but a lot of the time I meet with other solopreneurs, so we chat at someone’s house or over a coffee. Skype is my best friend for connecting with my clients, most of whom are in the US and UK.

There are days when I don’t feel like working because it is just so beautiful, but I force myself to do so anyway. And the good thing about setting my own schedule is that I can plan to have lunch on the beach any time I want.

As a tourist, what’s been your best experience so far?

It’s hard to pick just one experience. I love the outdoors, so my favorite Barbados experiences all include spending some time at Brownes Beach or Oistins and coffee at Coffee Italia opposite Accra Beach. Two experiences I really enjoyed were seeing underwater Barbados on the Atlantis submarine and seeing turtles and corals on the Cool Runnings catamaran cruise.

Accra Beach by cmakin

Any other insider tips for things to do while in Barbados?

Oooh – where should I start? There are a lot of great places to visit. If I had only one day in Barbados, here’s what I would do:

Get up early (at about 5am when it’s still dark) and drive down to Enterprise Beach and watch the sun rise over the ocean. Head down the coast towards Carlisle Bay, stopping to look at the red brick buildings in the Garrison area. Go to Brownes beach and chat with the locals while enjoying a refreshing dip.

Head into Bridgetown to see the Parliament Buildings (which includes the National Heroes museum), and the statue of Nelson. Head out of the city towards the West Coast and drive right past the splendid Sandy Lane and similar hotels to visit Speightstown, an old fishing village which has been refurbished and features the Fish Hook Grill, a great place for lunch.

Head to the northern-most point of the island and watch the waves crashing against the rocks.Go cross country to St Andrew and walk through the sand dunes on the Atlantic Coast before heading inland to the Barbados Wildlife Reserve (small, but an oasis on a hot day).

Head back to the south coast for a refreshing dip at Oistins and then enjoy the ambience at the Oistins Fish Fry in early evening. Barbados is a great place for fresh fish, including mahi-mahi, marlin, tuna and occasionally swordfish. If you can stand the pace, visit a nightclub in St Lawrence Gap.

The View from Speightstown by hodgers

For other LIP’s considering a move to Barbados, any words of wisdom or advice?

Barbados is a great place, but don’t expect it to be cheap because a lot of items are imported – and dutiable. We did a scouting trip before moving to see which things we should bring with us from the UK – it was well worth it – and we had a great holiday at the same time.

Thanks Sharon for all those tips and insights. It’s easy to consider sandy beaches and sunny skies the ideal stop for a Location Independent business, but there are a few more things to worry about than sand in your laptop it seems!

** This post was written by Andy Hayes. Find out more about Andy at the bottom. **

Welcome to one of the newest features on the Location Independent blog: Inspirational Destinations – a monthly interview with a LIP on location.

Up to now on the blog, we’ve focused on a lot of practical information and the nuts and bolts about location independent lifestyle; from the Ask The Coach Q&A to the book and business course. But the best part of being location independent is the ability to choose your home base – sometimes this can be the most difficult choice and the most emotional.

So at least once a month, I will be reaching out into the community and finding LIPs in vibrant, exciting (or perhaps tranquil and gorgeous – who knows) destinations who are willing to share their story.

These stories are all about all about inspiration: don’t do all that hard work to build yourself a nomadic lifestyle and then fail to take advantage of it fully. We’ve given you the tools to build a lifestyle the way you want it – and now we can help you decide where to spend it.

And with that I’d like to introduce our first victim interviewee, Leigh-Anne Russell. She’s based in Shanghai, China and has some interesting tips and trick so surviving personally and professionally in the People’s Republic…

First, could you briefly introduce your location independent business?

My business, Movashaka, produces live entertainment experiences to promote business and brands (this is the location dependent part). Movashaka also provides related services that are location independent e.g. booking agency, artist support services, such as showreel video editing, creation and management of promotional materials, eg. social media platforms, EPKs (electronic presskits).

You’re based in China. Whereabouts are you and what made you decide to relocate there?

I’m based in Shanghai. I first came to Shanghai in 1998 after a job hunt in Hong Kong resulted in an opportunity to move to Shanghai instead. I’ve been living in Shanghai almost ten years now, though I worked a two year stint in Macau (”Asia’s Las Vegas”) between ‘06 and ‘08.

As a business owner, how has your experience been living in China so far?

Now that there’s soft toilet paper and readily available fresh coffee, things are a lot more comfortable :-)

From a location independent perspective, as far as internet access goes, Shanghai is really not a bad choice. In fact, an announcement from Shanghai Telecom made in 2008 revealed plans to make Shanghai a wifi city in 2010, in time for the Shanghai World Expo.

In the meantime, there are plenty of options around town to work where you’ll find free access to reasonably reliable wifi. Major international courier service operators can be found here, too, as well as Kinko for printing and copying, and Western Union for convenient wiring of funds.

As a tourist, what’s been your best experience so far?

Having been firmly entrenched in Shanghai for so long, the city feels like home and I take a lot of things for granted. So, it was fantastic when mum came to visit recently as reliving all the quintessential Shanghai “Wow!” experiences through her eyes was so much fun.

One of the highlights was this particular day which took in the major tourist sights…

We started off with an early morning stroll in one of the oldest parks in Shanghai, Fuxing Park, where you can find locals of all ages engaged in plenty of activity such as tai qi, kung fu, badminton, traditional fan dancing, singing and playing music. Wandering out of the park, we ambled along the tree lined streets in the old French Concession area and took in the historical architecture of that period.

We hopped in a taxi and headed to “M on the Bund” for lunch on their terrace. This restaurant is housed on the top floor of one of the heritage buildings on the famous Bund promenade and is one of the best places to take in the view over looking the Bund, Huangpu River and the über-modern skyline of Pudong on the east side of the river.

The Bund, Shanghai by Mat Booth

With full bellies, we then walked off lunch along the Bund promenade, watching the boats and sampling a local sweet treat of toffee-covered fruit skewers (not for the faint-hearted). At the end of the promenade, a left turn and a venture along Nanjing East Road to take in the art deco buildings and colourful sights and sounds of one of Shanghai oldest, busiest shopping streets.

After several blocks, we stopped and soaked up the sights at People’s Square, a favourite gathering place for locals on a sunny day. We watched all the kite flying, bought a kite shaped like a giant squid and joined in the fun!

As this particular day happened to be on the weekend, a quick side step into the lusciously landscaped People’s Park and we came across the unforgettable sight of hundreds of eager parents in the “Matchmakers Market”, all touting the virtues of their unmarried sons and daughters trying to pair them up with a suitable spouse!

After a short rest back at home, we treated ourselves to a delicious dinner and plenty of good wine at The Kitchen on the east side of the river in Pudong. The Kitchen is a Japanese owned Italian restaurant with incredible service and specialty wood-fired pizzas cooked in a gleaming copper oven in the open kitchen. It also has a captivating view of the buildings along the Bund which at night are all beautifully illuminated.

To top things off, we finished the day on a high, literally, 100 floors high, to be exact, with a mind-blowing 360° view of Shanghai from the viewing deck of the Shanghai World Financial Centre. For my mum, who lives in a rural Cotswold town in the West of England, this just blew her mind.

Any other insider tips for things to do while in China?

If you base yourself in Shanghai, you’ll quickly see that there isn’t much in the way of green space. If you’re like me, and tend to go a bit stir-crazy in a concrete jungle after a while, there are luckily many options for day trips and long weekends where you can find yourself in rampant nature.

One of the most user-friendly day-trip options, if you don’t speak Chinese, is the garden city of Hangzhou which is just over an hour train ride away. There you can hike far from the madding crowd over the ridges of the tea plantation hilltops and bamboo forests.

Hangzhou tea plantation ridge hike

Another popular option is Moganshan, a village located in a mountainous area a few hours from Shanghai. Moganshan has an interesting history as it was the popular summer escape for the well-to-do foreigners living in Shanghai during the turn of last century.

Thanks to the likes of the expat run Naked Retreats and Moganshan Lodge, several of the old villas constructed as summer homes during that period have been restored and now serve as guesthouses and boutique hotels for those seeking a creative pause from the frenetic pace of Shanghai. Both Naked Retreats and Moganshan Lodge have wifi, too.

For other LIP’s considering a move to China any words of wisdom or advice?

It’s important to bear in mind that internet access in Mainland China can occasionally be temporarily disrupted which may prove prohibitive for some LIPs considering a move here. Certain sites are blocked by the Central Government, such as Youtube, Ning and Blogspot.

Hotmail, Twitter, Flickr are also all blocked during sensitive periods, most recently the 20th Anniversary of the Tian’anmen crackdown, though access to these sites has now been restored. There are certain ways around the firewall with proxy sites, of course. You can you this online test tool to check if your site or blog is blocked in China.

Procedures and documentation required when applying for a travel visa to China can change without notice. Recent changes to the procedure for a basic tourist visa require that you now present proof of a return trip flight ticket, namely to show you’ve already got your ticket out of China, as well as contact information for your China “host”. As these regulations are prone to change at a moment’s notice, checking with the Chinese embassy or consulate in the place where you intend to apply for your visa is paramount prior to committing to the China move.

Shanghai’s air quality, though improving, isn’t the best by any stretch of the imagination. If you intend to base yourself here for more than a few months at a time and have asthma or sinus issues, or are overly concerned about breathing in heavy metals-laden air, this might not be the place for you. :-)

Thanks so much Leigh-Anne for sharing all those great tips and information. It sounds like Shanghai is a bustling and fantastic place to be based – and your perfect day out I think will be on a community member’s to do list in no time!

** This post was written by Leigh Haugseth. Find out more about Leigh below **

It’s not unusual to experience some backlash when telling your friends and family about your switch to a location independent lifestyle. Fortunately from my own personal experience, most people are very supportive and curious.

But there are also those who are unsure of and cynical about your choice. When you’re going through a major transition in your life, any sort of negativity can make you doubt yourself – and there is simply no room for doubt when taking the plunge and starting your own new business and location independent life.

Having a strategy to deal with the naysayers and doubters in your life is vital to keep you focused and on track. Here are three tactics that can help…

Have Your ‘Elevator Speech’ Ready

People are more accepting when you sound very confident in what you’re doing. Even if you’re not, act like you are. Don’t lie, just tell them your goal and how you plan to get there. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the details, they don’t need to know.

I’ve found it helpful to create a quick 20 second ‘elevator speech’. This comes from the idea that if you were stuck in an elevator with someone who wanted to know your plans, you could quickly give them a truthful, focused picture of what those look like.

When you’re giving your ‘elevator speech’, whatever you do, don’t be wishy washy. It’s better to just not bring it up at all rather than say something like: ‘Well, I’d really like to travel for a while and if I could somehow make money while doing this, well, that would be great too. I’ve got a couple of ideas and I’m going to see what happens.’ I said something similar when first considering the Location Independent lifestyle. It did not go over well.

Instead, be purposeful: ‘I will soon be transitioning into a location independent lifestyle. I’m currently working on a project(s) while still in my day job. When I leave, I will be doing XYZ full time. This will allow me to work from home or another location.’ This version is concrete and understandable. If you stay positive and speak with confidence, you’ll put others, as well as yourself, at ease. They may even offer to help you with your new venture.

Be Prepared For Negativity

Be prepared for some negativity, don’t take it personally and don’t hold it against the other person – they either can’t see outside their own box or they may be jealous and trying to drag you down.

Whatever the reason for their negativity, if after you tell them your ‘elevator speech’ and they’re still unsupportive, consider avoiding them altogether. Just be careful when doing this though as while some people are skeptical, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not supportive, they may just be looking out for your best interests. Consider educating them on the possibilities of your proposed lifestyle – but be careful not to preach.

Be equally prepared for these same, unsupportive cynics to be excitedly asking about your progress at a later date. In fact, count on it and try not be the least bit smug when it happens. Instead, talk with them about how they can do it too, if they’re interested. This will be infinitely more rewarding than saying I told you so.

Reassure Them

Help your friends and family understand that while you may not be in the same place for any extended amount of time, you will still be in touch just as much as you normally would – but maybe by different means. If you’re not able to visit as often, introduce them to Skype. It’s such a fun and easy way to stay in touch. Sometimes, I’m actually more in touch with friends and loved ones when I’m on the road because of the freedom I’m allowed.

Most importantly, remember that you are unique. You have the courage to step out of your cubicle/box/hum-drum life and venture off to travel or create your own ideal location independent dream and really LIVE.

You understand that this kind of life is possible and believe in yourself enough to make it happen. And if friends and family see that you’re happy in your new life, they are more likely to be supportive and happy for you.
