Weekend Update: A Site Overhaul, New Features & The 2nd Edition

There are very few benefits I can think of, from being awake at 4.30am on a Sunday morning – but of those few, being able to write this post with no distractions on Twitter or elsewhere is one of them – yep, pregnancy is most definitely kicking my ass at the moment but with only 11 days to go until my expected due date, it should hopefully not be for too much longer!

This weekend’s update is focused around the Location Independent site and some of the new features we’ve got coming up for you…

Site Overhaul

If you’ve been on to the site recently (as opposed to reading it through your favourite feed reader), you may have noticed some subtle but actually pretty extensive changes to the Location Independent website as a whole.

What we’ve done is to basically restructure the layout & navigation of the site so that all the existing Location Independent resources can now be accessed more easily from the one navigation bar – rather than sending you off to separate sites for the Travel or Business resources. We’ve also tailored the sidebars in each section to be more relevant to the part of the site you’re on – and to make all the resources within that area (free & premium) more accessible.

Whilst it may seem more integrated to you as an “end user”, if you’re curious about the behind-the-scenes techy side of things, it’s actually still 5 separate websites/installations of Wordpress hosted on different sub-domains – which makes it simultaneously easier & more difficult to manage!

New Website & Blog Features

In our continuing quest to grow & service the Location Independent community, we’ve added the following new features which you can now find on the site:

  • A range of Community Badges to display on your website & a small range of “official” Location Independent organic cotton t-shirts to brand yourself with, as you gad about the globe or down to your local coffee shop :)
  • A  number of opportunities to be featured on the Location Independent blog – including our new “Community News” feature (coming up this Friday). We’re always on the lookout to interview & feature case studies of people who’ve achieved location independence and just a reminder of our “Ask The Coach” feature which is your opportunity to receive free coaching to help you achieve your goals.
  • Hopefully you enjoyed our very first podcast which we published on Friday; I’ve now figured out how to set this up as a separate feed so you can subscribe to the podcast (and also via iTunes) here >>>

An Update On The 2nd Edition

You may know I’ve been trying to get the 2nd edition of my original book, X Marks The Spot: The Indispensable Guide To Living & Working From Anywhere, finished & ready before the arrival of the mini-me.

I’m happy to say that (barring any early arrivals) it should be ready & on sale by the end of this week. More details – including the differences between the 1st & 2nd editions – can be found here >>>

In Other News Elsewhere…

Cody McKibben will be hosting the very first Location Independent Blog Carnival coming up this week, so keep an eye out for it on his site. We’ll be rotating the hosting of the carnival every month so to submit articles for each carnival in the future, bookmark this carnival submission page.

Chris Guillebeau of The Art of Non-Conformity recently launched the “Unconventional Writing Contest” with a chance to feature as a guest poster on his popular blog. You may remember a while back Chris endorsed our business course and he’s been a valuable supporter of our Location Independent project for a while now. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone even vaguely interested in unconventional and non-conformist approaches to life to raise their profile in this field.

That’s it for this week folks, who knows….this time next week we may have some very exciting news to announce :)
