Many people have asked where the term “location independent” came from. It’s the phrase I’ve used to describe our nomadic, work-from-anywhere lifestyle ever since we first started doing this in 2007.
Since then, it seems to have become synonymous with the unconventional kind of lifestyle that involves running your business whilst travelling to any number of exotic locations around the world – which is the kind of location independent lifestyle we’ve been living.
If that’s all you think it is however, then you’re missing the point (and so was I for a long, long time)…
But for a while now, I’ve believed that many of the underlying concepts of a lifestyle of location independence are wholly applicable to so many more people, not just those of us who want to travel permanently.
The biggest challenge of course is knowing where to start and what to focus on first. In sitting down to try and figure this out, I identified what I believe are the 3 major areas of change – key areas that one needs to focus on in order to implement the desired changes in their lifestyle.
These 3 areas are:
- Desire & ability to change location, as & when needed (fixed location vs. nomadic)
- Awareness of & ability to leverage web & online resources and tools (web unaware vs. web savvy)
- Ability to control & generate own income (employed vs. Entrepreneur)
And this is how those areas might apply to different groups of people for whom the concepts of location independence are far more relevant than you perhaps first thought…
KEY: The coloured dots represent where you may be now (and may be happy staying); the stars represent where you may (need to) be aiming for.

I think the recent focus on LIP for everyone (not just permanent travelers) is wonderful.
Delighted to have found your blog and dicovered the very politically correct sounding ‘Location Independent Professional’ which I will be using as a synonym for my ‘Non-9-to-5′er’ from now on. I think you’re hinting at something much bigger than just location indepedence in this article – what this is about is total worklife liberation and independence from everything the office entails, including lack of mobility. I have tried to enumerate these freedoms in my manifesto but it’s an area that we are all only just beginning to contemplate and understand. Time will show just how independent we can get.
Hi Lea
Great post, and really helps to focus the mind.
I also especially like the angle of the LIP lifestyle not necessarily involving travel.
I’m currently planning a return trip to the UK for an unkown period, and living a LIP lifestyle is still liberating. I don’t have to find a job, I don’t have to commit to a specific location in the UK based on where I can find work. I can decide to leave the UK at a later date without it effecting my income… In fact – it makes the whole prospect of returning to the UK a lot more “digestable”.. :-)
This is a great breakdown of the the different goals and possibilities of the LIP lifestyle.
