News & Updates for October 2008

There are a few minor (and one major) developments on the location independent front that we’d like to share with you today. First up are the minor tweaks we’ve made to the blog:

These are largely designed to make it far easier to navigate and find the content on here both for existing and new users. The tweaks include:

  1. A much clearer RSS subscribe button (up there on the banner).
  2. Related posts now appear at the bottom of every post (thanks to the Yet Another Related Posts plugin).
  3. Improved page navigation at the bottom of the blog, allowing you to navigate more easily to all 59 pages of posts on the blog (thanks to the WP-PageNavi plugin).
  4. “Favourite Posts”added to the sidebar – shout if there are others you think should be there.
  5. A search box in the sidebar which I though was there previously but obviously not (sorry!).
  6. The Bookstore pages have been tidied up and re-formatted – still a bit more to do on them but I think they’re an improvement on what was there previously.
  7. A few more adverts plus the Location Independent Amazon store added to the sidebar – these are all for products and services we use and/or recommend and might (if we’re lucky) generate a bit more income from this blog.
  8. Links to the new online communities we’ve just set up added to the sidebar – these include a Flickr group, a Facebook fan page, a LinkedIn group and links to my Twitter profile.

If you’re reading this via a feed, why not hop on over to the blog to check out the tweaks & let me know what you think?

But the big question, you might ask (aside from the glaring gaps in usability for visitors), is why have we been busy doing this?

This brings me on to the major development…

You may know that this project – Location Independent Living – has only ever really been a hobby for us. You may also know that Jonathan and I run a business together (Kinetiva); what you probably don’t know is that for the past year or more, we agreed that I’d be the driver behind this with Jonathan very much in the background.

This is all about to change!

As I type, Jonathan is working on his own professional site and will take over the running of the creative side of the business (branding, logos, web design and graphic design) both for his own studio business and for Kinetiva. I will continue to run the strategy, tech and business consulting services of Kinetiva but am now going to spend a large part of my time focusing on the Location Independent project.

We believe (as we have for a long time), that this could be a fantastic venture (professionally, personally and commercially) and it’s about time we started to focus on it. I have always enjoyed writing this blog, connecting with other LIPs and generally “working” on anything LIP-related (in fact, it’s often the first thing I’ll choose to work on, even though it’s been the hobby and not the income-generating stuff which tells me something).

So in the true style of lifestyle design, I’m now going to see if we can take this to the next level and make the Location Independent project a lifestyle-supporting (income generating!) project for us – and a truly inspiring, useful, resourceful and interactive project for you!

P.S.  – there’ll be a “proper” post following shortly.
